Your lymph nodes play a vital part in removing excess fluid from your body and when they’re affected by injury, surgery, radiation or even a deformity at birth, you may experience a type of swelling called Lymphedema. Lymphedema causes an abnormal amount of swelling in your body tissue, such as an arm or leg, that can’t be relieved through elevation. Some people experience Lymphedema in the breast, head and neck, or genitalia as well.
Our Services
At Saint Francis Healthcare Oncology Rehab at the Cancer and Wellness Center, our Certified Lymphedema Therapists treat lymphedema according to the international gold standard called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This one-on-one treatment consists of:
- Manual lymph drainage, a gentle, rhythmic, soothing massage technique that returns the fluid back to your circulatory system
- Education on Skin care to prevent infections
- Specific Exercises to stimulate the lymphatic system
- Compression bandaging, both stock and custom, to shrink and soften tissues
During your therapy, we with work one on one with you to treat the Lymphedema, and teach you ways to manage swelling from lymphedema even after your therapy is completed.
