Carol was surprised at how easily her doctor removed a benign tumor from her arm — and with no scarring

I couldn’t be happier with my decision to have it removed. I’m recommending Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett to all my family and friends.

Carol McGhie outpatient tumor patient testimonialRetired business owner Carol McGhie, 77, had been living with a large growth on her left forearm for more years than she cares to remember. Always diligent when it came to her health, she had it checked out by her primary care physician, as well as her orthopedist, both of whom diagnosed the growth as a benign, fatty tumor.

“I always thought of the tumor as bothersome,” she says. “And, of course, it wasn’t very nice to look at, but it wasn’t until the tumor started to grow that I decided it was time to have something done about it.”

Carol’s primary care doctor recommended she see surgeon Melvin Payne, III, M.D., at Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett to discuss her options.

“I remember I went in thinking that they could possibly drain the tumor to make it stop growing,” she says. “But Dr. Payne said it was too large and too dense to drain. He recommended surgery, and so that’s what we did.”

Warm and fuzzy feelings

Although she knew that outpatient surgery would only require her to be in the hospital for a period of a few hours, Carol says she was still pleasantly surprised at how fast and easy the surgery was at Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett.

“It was just such as wonderful experience,” she says. “I went in the morning and was home by the afternoon. The nurses and all the staff members were so nice and caring. I could tell they truly cared about me and making me comfortable.”

Carol admits that one of the best parts of her hospital visit was the warm blankets.

“Honestly, those warm blankets were so nice and comfy, and the care was so wonderful, I’d go back and have the surgery all over again tomorrow!”

Carol says that although the tumor, which at its largest had grown to the size of a small tomato, never gave her any pain, she’s very happy she had it removed.

“Even though it had grown to a noticeable size, there’s no scar,” she says. “I couldn’t be happier with my decision to have it removed. I’m recommending Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett to all my family and friends.”
