Saint Francis-Bartlett to Host Blood Drive/Lunch and Learn

Derek Venckus (901) 820-7072
May 3, 2006

As part of its commitment to increase our local blood supply, Saint Francis Hospital – Bartlett will host a blood drive on Thursday, May 11th from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  A Lifeblood mobile unit will be located near the hospital’s main entrance at 2986 Kate Bond Rd.  Individuals who are at least 17 years of age, 110 pounds and in generally good health can donate blood.
In addition, Saint Francis-Bartlett will be hosting a complimentary Lunch and Learn with Lifeblood on Thursday, May 11th from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The event will be held in the hospital’s Magnolia Room on the first floor and will educate the community about the importance of maintaining an iron-rich diet.
Attendees will receive complimentary hematocrit and hemoglobin checks – both measures of the blood’s ability to carry oxygen – followed by an informative and interactive session about how to make an easy iron-rich lunch. Lunch will be served and seating is limited, so call 901.820.7022 to reserve a seat.
Maintaining healthy hematocrit and hemoglobin levels is essential to donate blood for patients in our area hospitals. Hematocrit and hemoglobin may be improved by increasing the amount of iron in the diet or by using an iron supplement. To learn more about an iron-rich diet, visit www.lifeblood.org and click the flower icon for a list of iron-rich foods to eat for about a week to ten days prior to donating blood.
