Thanks to the employees of Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett, the first Holiday party held at the new home for the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is one that won’t soon be forgotten. On December 14th, Santa Claus and the employees of Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett arrived at the Germantown campus of the school to spread holiday cheer.
The idea for the event originated at Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett’s recent United Way fundraising campaign. A representative of the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf spoke to hospital employees about how the United Way benefits the school. In the process, an idea was born.
“I just thought it would be great to do something for these children,” said Wade Tyrrell, chief nursing officer. “I had the school send us pictures of the kids along with their wish lists and encouraged the departments here at the hospital to get involved. The rest just happened.”
“The rest” included the hospital staff purchasing more than 150 presents for the children. This exceeded Tyrrell’s goal of giving each child at least five gifts.
"Saint Francis-Bartlett has shown an enormous amount of kindness to the children at MOSD" said Kathy Smith, development director of the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf. "The generosity of these employees means so much to our children and their families. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Wade Tyrrell and the rest of the staff at Saint Francis-Bartlett."
“It was just a total hospital effort to do something for these kids,” said Tyrrell. “It was a great feeling to watch them open their gifts and see their smiles. Seeing their happiness was my Christmas gift.”
