In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett is providing free colorectal cancer screening kits. The painless test takes just a few minutes and can be performed in the convenience of your own home. The screening kit can be requested by calling 820-7022. Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is the third most common cancer in both men and women. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 52,180 deaths from colon and rectum cancer are expected to occur in 2007. The good news is that colorectal cancer rates have been decreasing the past two decades due, in part, to an increase in screenings. Beginning at the age of 50, men and women should consider a screening for colorectal cancer. Additional risk factors include a family history of the disease or a personal history of chronic inflammatory bowel disease. “Regular screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer or discover it an early stage,” said Dr. Carles Surles, Jr., M.D., a gastroenterologist on the medical staff at Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett. “If we catch colorectal cancer at an early, localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 90%.” |
